Hit-and-Run Vehicle Strikes, Critically Injures Woman in Newark

Detectives for The Essex County Prosecutor's Office were called to assist at the scene of an investigation into a pedestrian strike that has a woman fighting for her life in Newark overnight.

The incident occurred in the South Ward community of East Alpine Street near Elizabeth Avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m.

Emergency responders and rescue crews rushed to the scene and found the adult female victims suffering severe injuries after a car struck her then sped away from the area according to preliminary reports.

The unidentified woman was rushed to University Hospital with severe life-threatening head injuries.

Police believe a dark colored 4-door vehicle struck the woman then took off.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
