Elizabeth Man That Fled After Sex Assault in Hillside Captured in Dominican Republic

Elizabeth Hillside

An Elizabeth man who never showed up to court proceedings while a jury was in the process of convicting him of sexually assaulting a child, was captured in the Dominican Republic, authorities said.

After two days of deliberation, Nikolaos Katogiritis, 47, was found guilty earlier this month of exposing himself to a 12-year-old boy at the Hillside Community Pool in August 2012.

During the two day deliberation Katogiritis fled the area.

Authorities tracked Katogiritis to a hotel in the city of Boca Chica, Dominican Republic, where he was arrested Sept. 17, acting Union County Sheriff Joe Cryan said.

He arrived back this evening to Newark Liberty International Airport, authorities said.

Shortly after 7 p.m. Union County sheriff's officers took Katogiritis into custody at the airport and is currently at the county jail in Elizabeth.

Katogiritis is facing second-degree sexual assault, third-degree endangering the welfare of a child and fourth-degree lewdness.

Katogiritis had been released on $125,000 bail in 2012.
