Newark Police Sergeants Use Narcan To Save Unconscious West Ward Man

Newark

Police officials in Newark are reporting that officers assigned to the 6th Precinct saved the life of a man by administering NARCAN to him on Monday evening.

According to police, at approximately 10:15 p.m., officers responded to the 900 block of South Orange Avenue on a call of a sick person.

Police say officers arrived and located a man who had passed out at that location.

The unresponsive victim exhibited shallow breathing while going in and out of consciousness according to police.

The Sergeant Maik Alexander, who responded to the scene, administered one dose of NARCAN to the victim who then became responsive officials said.

Police say the victim was transported to University Hospital for further treatment.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, just before 7:00 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Summer Avenue on a possible drug overdose.

Officers say they found the victim, a female, unconscious, not breathing. Noting several signs indicative of an overdose, Sergeant Ramon Negron administered NARCAN to the victim. She regained consciousness and was later transported to Clara Mass Hospital for further treatment.

“NARCAN certainly saves lives. Recognizing a need to administer NARCAN and knowing how to use it is pivotal. Newark Police Division supervisors are trained for exactly this type of situation. I commend the Sergeant Alexander and Sergeant Negron for jobs well done,” said Director Ambrose.
