A suspect with a lengthy criminal history was arrested on multiple weapons and drug charges late this morning by a law enforcement task force comprised of Essex County sheriff’s detectives and Newark police officers.
According to authorities, detectives from the Bureau of Narcotics and Tactical Response Team along with Newark police officers executed a search warrant shortly before noon today at a townhouse, on the 300 block of Irvine Turner Boulevard.
Upon arrival, officers made a forced entry into the residence, fearing destruction of evidence, and detained the target of our on-going investigation, 49-year-old Corey Whitehead.
As a result of the search, a fully loaded, 9mm, Taurus semi-automatic weapon with an extended capacity magazine, a fully loaded and defaced, .25 caliber, Titan semi-automatic pistol, three heroin-filled glassine envelopes, stamped ‘GOLDFINGER’ in red ink, four vials of ‘crack’ cocaine, and an assortment of drug packaging and processing materials were seized.
Officials say Whitehead was charged with two counts each of the unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public housing complex.
In addition, Whitehead was charged with possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a weapon while committing a narcotics crime, possession of a defaced weapon and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
According to authorities, Whitehead was lodged at the county jail where he awaits a bail hearing on today’s charges.
