Woman, Child Injured After Car Fleeing Newark Police Crashes into Them on Route 22

Police took two suspects into custody after a pursuit ended in a crash with injuries on Route 22 Sunday morning.

According to a statement released by Newark Police approximately 9:45 a.m., police attempted a motor vehicle stop of a 1997 Ford Econoline van reported stolen out of Elizabeth.

Authorities say police observed the vehicle in the area of Nye and Wainwright streets when the driver sped off as officers approached, striking a vehicle at Route 22 near Frelinghuysen Avenue.

Police say a female passenger and child suffered minor injuries and were transported to University Hospital for treatment.

While fleeing, the suspect vehicle entered a pond in the area of McLean Place and Eastern Parkway in Hillside, where three suspects fled the vehicle.

According to police a male and a female were immediately taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit.

Police say at least one male suspect remains at large.

The two apprehended suspects, Edmundo Rodrigues. 43, of Manalapan, and Michelle Campbell, 55, of Elizabeth, both face charges of Resisting Arrest.

Rodrigues is further charged with Receiving Stolen Property and Eluding.

Police say both were transported to University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
