Morris County Prosecutor Urges Members of Community to Employ Crime Prevention Strategies

Morris County

In an effort to reduce and solve burglaries that occur in our County, Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp would like to remind the public about important strategies that can be taken to prevent victimization by burglars.

Morris County is not immune to burglary, thefts, and other property crime; however, residents can take important steps to reduce their exposure to these types of crimes. It is also important to remain vigilant and to immediately report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Officials say the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office website (www.prosecutor.morriscountynj.gov/crime/) includes several important crime prevention strategies, some of which are outlined here.

It is recommended that members of the public:

Always keep all doors, windows, and garages locked whether you are home or away. A reputable locksmith or other qualified individual should install sturdy locks and strike plates on exterior doors.

Consider installing a video surveillance system and/or alarm system that covers the exterior and interior areas of the residence.

Install interior light timers and exterior motion sensor lights to give the appearance of occupancy even when you are not home.

Keep your landscape, including all bushes and trees, trimmed to avoid potential hiding places for invaders.

Keep blocking devices, such as metal bars or track blockers, on all sliding glass doors.

Ask your local police department about “Neighborhood Watch” programs, which aid in keeping your streets safe from potential invaders.

Never leave dry-cleaning or other deliveries sitting in front of your home for an extended period of time.

When you are away for a length of time, have a neighbor collect your mail and newspaper, or cancel deliveries, to avoid the appearance of vacancy. Ask your neighbor to keep a watchful eye on your residence when away and report any suspicious activity to police.

Utilize safes, safe deposit boxes, and hidden areas in your home for valuables.

Maintain photos of valuables in a safe place and note any serial numbers if possible.

Dogs are effective deterrents as well as living alarms for potential intruders.

Lock your motor vehicle when it is parked outside or inside a garage.

Overall, making your residence always appear occupied is an important crime prevention tip. It is also always important that as a community, we look out for our neighbors and report any suspicious activity.

Prosecutor Knapp stated: “If something does not look right, do not hesitate to report your observations to law enforcement. The safety and security of our residents is paramount. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office will continue its efforts to make our community safe and to solve crimes that occur. It is my hope that members of the community will follow some of the suggested best practices to assist us in keeping our county as safe as possible.”

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office Intelligence Unit is working closely with Municipal and County Law Enforcement Agencies to solve and prevent burglaries in the community.

Members of the public are reminded that they can provide crime tips to the Morris County Sheriff’s CrimeStoppers either online at www.copcall.org or by calling (973) COP CALL – (973) 267-2255.
