Police officials in Newark are reporting the arrest of Mr. Maurice Edwards, 61, of New York City, in connection with four commercial burglaries that occurred in the downtown district.
Police say The Old First Presbyterian Church, located at 820 Broad Street, Beauty Supplies Store, at 183 Market Street, Crown Royal Chicken and Biscuit, located at 181 Market Street, and Rainbow Shop, at 756 Broad Street were all burglarized by Edwards.
According to police, at approximately 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, August 11th, police responded to the church on a burglary alarm.
Police say the suspect fled after stealing food and drinks from the church.
Detectives of the 3rd Precinct identified Maurice Edwards as a suspect.
Police say on Sunday, August 12th, officers responded to the beauty supply store, where the owner reported that a burglary occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. and $400.00 was stolen.
Detectives of the 3rd Precinct also identified Edwards as a suspect in this incident.
According to police, on the same day, officers responded to the chicken restaurant, where the owner reported that a suspect broke stolen approximately $400.00 from the business before fleeing the scene.
Edwards was identified by detectives as a suspect in this burglary.
Police say in the overnight hours of Thursday, August 16th and Friday, August 17th, Edwards broke into the Rainbow Shop clothing And took items.
Police arrested Edwards on Friday in the 700-block of Broad Street then charged him with four counts each of Burglary, Theft and Criminal Mischief.
Police say Edwards was also wanted on two outstanding warrants.
These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
