SOMERVILLE, N.J. – Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson announced on August 16, Laura Gonzalez, of Paramus, New Jersey, was found guilty of 2nd degree endangering the welfare of a child and simple assault, a disorderly person’s offense.
The guilty verdicts were returned by a petit jury after a trial in New Jersey Superior Court before the Honorable Angela Borkowski, J.S.C. The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced on September 27, 2018.
Prosecutor Robertson stated the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office was notified on November 23, 2017, by the Division of Child Protection & Permanency (DCP&P) that a 9 month-old Bernard’s Township child was admitted to the Morristown Medical Center with a right femur spiral fracture, a fractured right tibia and a left ankle corner fracture.
The victim’s parents indicated that their child was under the supervision of a nanny, defendant Laura Gonzalez who they hired through an Internet-based service.
An investigation by detectives with the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Sex Crimes/Child Abuse Unit revealed that the fractures occurred while the infant was under the care of defendant.
Gonzalez has been held in the Somerset County Jail under an Order of Pretrial Detention since her arrest. The State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Frank Kolodzieski.
