Family and friends have identified the 37-year-old Millville coach killed Thursday night by gunfire following a youth football practice.
According to the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office, police responded to the Lakeside Middle School on Sharp Street shortly after 8 p.m. for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, police found Joseph Jones shot while in or near his car.
A preliminary investigation revealed that masked individual(s) involved in the homicide fled the scene in what has been described as a maroon colored sedan.
While fleeing the scene, the suspect(s) fired multiple rounds at a law enforcement officer in the area of Garden Road on Route 55 (northbound).
Officials say officer did not return gunfire nor was the officer injured however the suspect vehicle eluded capture.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information will be released at this time.
The shooting reportedly occurred as the youth football team wrapped up practice.
