Officials from the NJ State Police are continuing to investigating a crash that killed a man on I-78 in Berkeley Heights on Thursday.
Police say at approximately 2:46 pm, a dump truck was traveling I-78 eastbound in Berkeley Heights when, in the area of milepost 43.6, the driver lost control, struck the concrete median barrier and entered the westbound lanes.
Police say the dump truck then struck a 2015 Nissan Altima, a 2013 Nissan Altima and a Ford Taurus which were all traveling westbound.
Medical personnel arrived at the scene and pronounced the driver of the 2015 Nissan Altima Mr. Donald Desmond, 53, Easton, PA, dead at the scene as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Police say the driver of the dump truck sustained moderate injuries, the driver of the 2013 Nissan Altima sustained minor injuries and the driver of the Ford Taurus sustained minor injuries.
Police closed all westbound lanes on the I-78 west for approximately 8 hours and the left, center, and right lanes of I-78 east were closed for approximately 3 hours resulting in heavy traffic congestion.
The cause and circumstances of the crash remains under investigation.
