Officials this afternoon have confirmed that two children are dead and several other people were injured in a Union City building fire.
According to authorities, firefighters responded to 416 25th Street sometime before 9 a.m., for a report of a fire at a three-story residential building.
Officials say the fire by 10:06 a.m. was at five alarms. It was not until 11:26 a.m. that crews were able to place it under control.
Authorities say the fire damaged two buildings - 416 25th Street and 414 25th Street - leaving approximately 30 people displaced.
Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said two children - 2-year-old Jason Gonzalez and 5-year-old Mailyn Wood succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire. In addition, there are currently two people in critical condition and a third in stable condition. The name of the 8-year-old boy has not been released.
Officials added that a total of 16 firefighters were treated at the scene while eight were transported to area hospitals.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
