Convicted Sex Offender Currently Serving 55 Year Sentence Gets More Time for New Charges in NJ

New Jersey

The Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday that a 50-year-old man currently serving a 55 year sentence was sentenced Friday to 15 years in New Jersey state prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a girl in Monroe Township, Washington Township and Glassboro starting when she was six in 1992 and continuing for two years.

Superior Court Judge Kevin T. Smith said he ordered that Bryan W. Anast, 50, currently serving a 55 year sentence in California for multiple sex offenses, to be evaluated at New Jersey’s Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center - a facility for sex offenders in Avenel, New Jersey. There it was determined he is a repetitive and compulsive sex offender, making him eligible to serve his sentence and undergo treatment at the center.

Officials say that under terms of a negotiated plea, Anast’s sentence will run concurrently with his 55-year California sentence, imposed August 15, 2014 on six counts of lewd acts with a child, sexual abuse and possession of child pornography.

According to Judge Smith, if Anast’s California incarceration ends short of the term imposed, he must go to New Jersey’s Adult Diagnostic and Treatment Center in Avenel to complete sentence.

In sentencing Anast, Judge Smith said he gave significant weight to the possibility that Anast would reoffend. During the Avenel evaluation, he admitted to a lifelong interest in pre-pubescent children, the judge said.

According to officials the victim in the California and New Jersey offenses was the same girl, who disclosed Anast’s acts when she was 18 in 2006.
