A Trenton man was convicted by a jury on Tuesday of a second-degree gun
charge, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri reported.
According to authorities, on June 12th a Mercer County jury found Rakim Williams, 29, guilty of a single count of second-degree certain persons not to have weapons.
Officials say, on September 15, 2017, officers with the Trenton Police Department Street Crimes Unit observed Williams take an object out of his waistband and throw it on the ground at the corner of E. State Street and Olden Avenue. When one of the officers approached Williams, he ran away. After a brief foot chase, Williams was taken into custody and the object he had dropped earlier was determined to be a 9mm handgun.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 27. He is eligible for a discretionary extended term with a potential maximum sentence of 20 years with a 10-year period of parole ineligibility. If the state’s motion for an extended term is not granted, Williams faces anywhere from five to 10 years in state prison with a minimum five-year period of parole ineligibility.
Assistant Prosecutor Timothy P. McCann represented the state during the four-day trial before Mercer County Superior Court Judge Thomas M. Brown. The defendant was represented by Amber Forrester.
