The family of a man killed while crossing a street in Newark is keeping hope alive for a possible arrest of the driver of the vehicle who sped away from the scene after the incident.
It has been one complete year on that late June night where the family of 63-year-old Irvington resident, **Mr. Donald C. Jones,** told RLS Metro Breaking News that he just transported his wife to the location and stopped to get dinner at a restaurant near the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and East Peddie Street shortly before 11:30 p.m.
What happened next, was unthinkable; Mr. Jones attempted to cross the four-lane Elizabeth Avenue when a vehicle stopped to allow him to pass but a speeding car traveled around the stopped vehicle and struck Jones; throwing him several feet while his wife observed the incident in horror.
Several good Samaritans and Mr. Jones's wife rushed to his side and provided required medical assistance, but it was not enough to save his life.
According to The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, EMS rushed Jones to University Hospital where he transitioned a short time later. Authorities have not released information on a possible suspect sought or captured according to family members.
Police have not released a description of the fleeing vehicle, but witnesses believe that the car was silver or light-colored car (possibly an SUV) and had front-end damage.
A beloved father and grandfather of several, Mr. Jones was loved, respected by many, and most importantly, he was somebody, family members said. Family members say finding the driver responsible for the incident appears to be going cold since there is little to no updates giving by authorities, but the love they have for Mr. Jones stays warm inside their hearts.
If you were out and about on Elizabeth Avenue on that night and can recall any details that could assist police in bringing the driver of this car to justice, please contact The Newark Police Department.
Continue to rest Mr. Jones, peacefully.
The suspect wanted for this crime is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law upon their capture or surrender to authorities.
