Emergency responders are on the scene of a train strike with a confirmed fatality in Newark's Ironbound section at this time.
It happened at the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Rome Street just before 1 p.m. where police and rescue crews arrived at the scene after receiving reports of a male struck by an 11-car Norfolk Southern non-passenger cargo train Passiac -Harsimus Line-.
Emergency responders arrived to find the unidentified male suffering severe injuries according to reports.
Medical personnel pronounced the victim dead at the scene.
**UPDATE 2:20 pm Statement from Norfolk Southern**: Officials say at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, a Norfolk Southern freight train struck and fatally injured a male pedestrian who was on the tracks near Wilson Avenue in Newark, New Jersey.
The train crew sounded the train’s horn in warning and put the train into emergency braking, but could not avoid striking the person.
The eastbound train, 1,949 feet long and 1,332 tons, was moving shipping containers to Croxton, New Jersey.
Norfolk Southern is assisting local law enforcement in investigating the incident.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has been called to the scene to assist in the investigation
The investigation is active and ongoing.
