A 22-year-old driver who was allegedly behind the wheel of a car that struck a tree Sunday killing one of its passengers.
Officials said Eduardo Paez-Lopez was driving east on Yale Drive just before midnight when he went off the road and struck a tree.
Upon arrival, police found the vehicle occupied by Arcadio Hernandez Marcos, 44, of Lakewood, who died as a result of his injuries.
The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, Ocean County Sheriff's Office in collaboration with the Lakewood Police Department identified Paez-Lopez as the driver of the vehicle and took him into custody after he fled from the scene.
Police charged Paez-Lopez with death by auto and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. He is being held without bail at the Ocean County jail.
Officials have not released the identity of the rear seat passenger who also fled after the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
