UPDATE: Squatters Killed in Three-Alarm New Brunswick House Fire

A fire that killed two people in a house in New Brunswick is under investigation.

According to a statement released by police, on Saturday evening, at approximately 9:50 pm, New Brunswick Fire Department, and police department personnel responded to 289 Seaman Street to investigate reports of a structure fire.

Police say upon their arrival, the house at the location was fully involved in fire, and fire department personnel were quickly able to bring the fire under control.

According to fire officials, 289 Seaman Street is an unoccupied structure that was condemned and boarded up.

A search of the structure by firefighters located two unresponsive adult males on the second floor. Officials say the individuals were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital where both were pronounced deceased.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the fire was accidental and not suspicious in nature. The victims are believed to be squatters who had gained access to the boarded structure.

In addition, two firefighters were treated for minor injuries sustained while fighting the fire.
