Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Scott Cartmell of the Piscataway Police Department announced that a man from Woodbridge has been charged with causing the death of a 27-year old township man who was a passenger in the car.
Officials said Tayib Mahmood, 29, of Woodbridge, has been criminally charged today with vehicular homicide in the second degree. In addition, he was issued motor vehicle summonses for driving while intoxicated, driving under the influence in a school zone, reckless and careless driving, and failure to maintain lane. Mahmood is scheduled to appear in New Brunswick for his initial court appearance on June 12th.
The investigation determined that in the early morning hours of May 6th, Mahmood was driving a 2014 Toyota Camry, when he hit a concrete barrier on Stelton Road near Jessie Way and the car caught fire. Mahmood was taken to Robert Wood Johnson Hospital with serious injuries and underwent immediate surgery. The passenger, Tahir Jamile, 27, of the Colonia section of Woodbridge, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Sergeant Constance Crea at (732) 562-2340, or Detective Erik Larsen at (732) 745-3263.
As in the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Mahmood are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
