A 31-year-old Newark woman was caught after attempting to purchase a second vehicle at a Jersey City car dealership using a fraudulent identity.
Officials stated that a woman who recently had a Mercedes fraudulently purchased under her name at Hillside dealership received a second alert Thursday of a second credit application this time at a Jersey City dealer.
According to police, the victim immediately contacted Hillside police who requested that Jersey City officers respond to the Toyota dealership located on Route 440.
Responding officers approached, Shannon M. Stevens, 31, who initially claimed to be the victim, and arrested her.
Authorities ultimately charged Stevens with theft, receiving stolen property, credit application fraud and providing a false government document – a driver's license.
Officials said Stevens made her first appearance via video link from Hudson County jail Friday, where she was released with supervision pending trial.
The complaint states officers located the Mercedes parked nearby after Stevens handed over the keys to the vehicle at the time of her arrest.
