Female Trespasser Struck by High Speed Amtrak Train in South Brunswick

NJ Transit officials are investigating a train strike that left a woman dead in South Brunswick this evening.

According to a statement released by Amtrak officials, the Northeast Regional train number 184 was traveling from Washington, D.C. to New York at 4:16 p.m. when it came into contact with a person illegally trespassing on the tracks west of Metro Park, N.J.

The unidentified female was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say there were no injuries reported to the 443 passengers or crew members on board.

Amtrak Police are cooperating with New Jersey Transit Police and local law enforcement to investigate the incident. Other Amtrak trains will be delayed due to the investigation including, 651, 173, 2165, 129 and 2170 according to officials.

"This is a critical reminder that it takes a full mile for a train to stop and about the importance of exercising caution around railroad tracks and crossings. Amtrak continues to work closely with Operation Lifesaver (OLI) to communicate these dangers" officials said.

The incident remains under investigation.
