A police pursuit that ended in a crash leaving one person dead in Newark overnight is now in the hands of the Essex County Prosecutor's Office to investigate.
A spokesperson for the Essex County Prosecutor's Office would only confirm that the victim is an unidentified female pedestrian who was killed during a police pursuit that ended in Newark's South Ward Saturday night.
According to preliminary reports, police were following a vehicle wanted in connection with a carjacking that occurred in an East Orange neighborhood just before 10 a.m.

The vehicle refused to stop for Newark Police and sped away in the Jeep from the scene according to reports.
The suspect's vehicle slammed into a car in the vicinity of Avon Avenue and South 14th Street a short time later.
EMS rushed the female to University Hospital where she died sometime overnight.
A male suspect fled the scene on foot and remains at-large.
The investigation is in its early stages according to the prosecutor's office.
