Electrical Fire Causes Evacuation, Power Outage at Newark City Hall

Fire officials in Newark are reporting that firefighters evacuated Newark City Hall and 22 Franklin Street due to fire that ignited an electrical grid in the building Tuesday night.

According to a statement released by officials, at approximately 9:52 p.m., firefighters responded to 22 Franklin Street, which is adjacent to City Hall, due to smoky conditions.

Firefighters arriving at the scene found that an electrical grid caught fire then burned itself out.

Crews immediately evacuated the building until further notice.

Officials say no on suffered injuries during the smoke condition.

"Presently, City Hall and 22 Franklin Street have no power, and PSE&G has been notified of the condition" Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said.

The incident remains under investigation.
