The driver of a car that plunged off the Garden State Parkway managed to escape before the car submerged in the water.
Police and firefighters responded to a report of an accident Wednesday around 6:54 p.m. on the Parkway. Upon arrival, Clark First Aid squad attended to the driver, who self-extracted from the vehicle.
Clark water rescue members assisted by Cranford, Linden and Rahway Fire Departments entered the water to assist with securing and removing the vehicle from the water and to assure there were no other occupants inside.
According to officials, the Union County Hazmat responded to the scene to assure no vehicle fluids were leaking into the water.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
