UPDATE: 34-Year-Old Man Shot Dead in Newark's West Ward

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in Newark earlier today -Tuesday-.

According to a statement released by police, shortly before 9:00 am, Newark police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Brookdale Avenue on reports of shots fired.

Police say arriving officers located an unresponsive male in a driveway.

EMS arrived at the scene and found the man suffering from an apparent gunshot wound then pronounced him dead at the scene at 9:10 am, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.

Police identified the victim as Willie Jackson, 34, of Newark.

This incident is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing, according to Fennelly.
