Police conducted and overnight investigation and searched for a suspect who fired a gun in the vicinity of a Newark Charter School causing a bullet to enter a classroom filled with children.
Emergency responders rushed to the North Star Academy-Westside Elementary School at 15th Avenue and South15th Street -The old 15th Avenue Public School- before 3 p.m. after they received reports of shots fired in the vicinity of the school.
Units arrived at the scene met with school officials who locked down the facility and secured hundreds of children after a bullet tore through a window of a second-grade class causing frantic children to seek cover for safety.
According to preliminary reports, police recovered the bullet inside the classroom as they checked for injured staff/students. One student obtained a minor hand injury after shattering glass struck the child officials said.
Detective checked surveillance cameras in the area to find a possible suspect responsible for the shooting, but as of 3:30 a.m. today -Wednesday-, police reported no arrests.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
