UPDATE: Irvington Man Accused of Killing Woman in Newark Shoots Himself in Head

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, is investigating a fatal shooting.

At approximately 8 a.m. today Newark Police were advised that a shooting had occurred in the 100 block of Scheerer Avenue in Newark. When they arrived on the scene they discovered a woman suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. She was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Tiffany Wilson, 28, of Newark.

In the course of the investigation law enforcement officers attempted to apprehend the suspect. There was a pursuit which ended in Summit, at which point the suspect suffered a non-fatal, self-inflicted gunshot wound. He is currently being treated at an area hospital. He has been identified as Kareem Dawson, 31, of Irvington. He is facing murder charges.

The preliminary investigation indicates the victim and the suspect previously were in a domestic relationship.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

According to court records, Dawson was recently arrested twice on domestic violence charges but was released from custody pending trial.
