Newark

Police announced the arrest of a 24-year-old Newark man found in possession of a handgun.

According to police, at approximately 3:50 p.m., officers patrolling the area of Muhammad Ali Avenue and Charlton Street observed a group of four individuals standing outside a parked Jeep. Officers detected a strong odor of burning marijuana and approached the group.

When the group became aware of police presence, they entered the vehicle. Officers conducted a motor vehicle stop and observed a passenger - later identified as Al-Taraad Squire, 24, of Newark - in possession of a handgun and also found him in possession of 142 glassine envelopes of heroin and 65 vials of cocaine.

Police immediately arrested and charged Squire with two counts of CDS Possession, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapon Possession. Alston is charged with Possession of Marijuana.

Authorities said officers also observed the driver, identified as Tyrell Alston, 24, of Somerset, in possession of marijuana. Police arrested and issued Alston motor vehicle summonses for Driving While Suspended, CDS in a Motor Vehicle, Unclear Plates, Obstruction of Windshield and Expired Inspection Sticker.

The other two passengers were interviewed and checked for outstanding warrants before being sent on their way.

These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
