Newark School Placed on Shelter in Place Status After Police Pursuit of Suspects

A brief police pursuit that occurred this afternoon had police chase several suspects after they crashed a stolen car into a police vehicle in Newark.

According to authorities, police observed a stolen Ford Taurus near the intersection of Martin Luther King Blvd and West Kinney Street at around 1:30 p.m.

Police said as officers attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop, the driver of the suspected vehicle accelerated and rammed the police car.  

A pursuit initiated but was immediately terminated in front of 75 Muhammad Ali Boulevard with the suspect's vehicle crashed into a parked car that overturned police said.

Officers providing assistance canvassed the area and apprehended one of two suspects who fled from the vehicle.  

An Essex County Sheriff's K9 Unit responded but was unsuccessful at locating the second suspect police said.

School officials placed Louise A. Spencer on lock a down stays for a short period while officers searched the immediate area for the suspect.  

The marked police car sustained minor damage during the initial incident according to police.

There were no reported injuries.
