Police Make Arrest in Paterson Shooting

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Deputy Paterson Police Chief Troy Oswald announce that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, in conjunction with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, Jamar Godwin-Deavereaux, 24-years-old of Paterson, was arrested on Jan. 29th, in relation to a shooting incident that took place over the weekend in the area of Godwin Avenue Paterson.

Authorities charged Godwin-Deavereaux with Attempted Murder, First Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree; Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, Second Degree, and Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons, Second Degree in relation to a shooting investigation from Jan. 27th.

In addition, authorities charged Godwin-Deavereaux with Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, Second Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Rifle, Third Degree, Certain Persons Not to Have Weapons, Second Degree, Possession of a Prohibited Device, namely a silencer, Fourth Degree, and Possession of a Other Weapon, namely a Pellet Gun, Fourth Degree.

Paterson Police Department members on January 27th, responded to the area of 12th Avenue a report of an individual who had been shot.

Upon arrival the police located a 26-year old Paterson man who was transported to Saint Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson where he was treated and released for a gunshot wound.

Based on the investigation Jamar Godwin-Deavereaux was identified as the suspect from the shooting incident that took place in the area of Godwin Avenue Paterson. During his apprehension on Jan. 29th, police found him to be in possession of numerous weapons.

The sentencing exposure for Godwin-Deavereaux on First Degree Attempted Murder is 10-20 years New Jersey State Prison with 85% of those terms to be served before parole pursuant to the No Early Release Act and 5 years parole supervision; on Second Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Handgun is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with a minimum of 42 months before parole eligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; on Second Degree Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 42 months of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act; and on Second Degree Certain Persons not to Possess a Firearm it is 5-10 years New Jersey State Prison with 5 years of parole ineligibility pursuant to the Graves Act, on Third Degree, Unlawful Possession of a Rifle it is 3-5 years New Jersey State Prison, and 4th Degree Possession of a Prohibited Device it is 18 months New Jersey State Prison.

According to authorities, Jamar Godwin-Deavereaux is scheduled to appear at Central Judicial Processing on January 30, 2018. The State has filed a motion for pretrial detention in this matter that will be heard by a Superior Court Judge.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
