Father Struck, Killed in South Amboy As He Attempted to Secure Daughter in Vehicle

Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew C. Carey and Chief Darren Lavigne of the South Amboy Police Department announced today that police are investigating a motor vehicle crash that killed a 48-year-old man in South Amboy last night.

 

The victim, Benjamin Navarrete, 48, of Old Bridge, was standing outside his Mitsubishi Outlander on Jack O’Leary Boulevard, in front of the YMCA, at 4:58 p.m.  on Jan. 29th, attempting to secure his child in his car when he was struck by a Toyota Corolla.

Police said Navarrete was airlifted to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was pronounced dead at approximately 6:20 pm.

 

The driver of the Toyota, later identified as Patrick Walsh, 53, of South Amboy, was transported to an area hospital for treatment. According to authorities, he’s in stable condition.

 

Also injured in the crash was Navarrete’s 6-year-old daughter. EMS transported her to the hospital with what authorities described as non-life threatening injuries.

 

The crash is being investigated by Detective David Keegan of the South Amboy Police Department and Detective Mark Morris of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.

 

The investigation is active and is continuing.
