There were more than a dozen residents displaced after a fire tore through a vacant home then extended to an occupied house in Newark overnight.
Heavy fire broke out inside a two and a half wood framed vacant house located at 140 South 9th Street shortly before 12:30 a.m. sending firefighters to the scene where they encountered heavy fire coming from the roof of the house.
According to officials, flames quickly spread to 138 South 9th Street forcing the evacuation of more than a dozen residents.
Firefighters gained control of the fire in about an hour with a search of both structures for trapped and injured occupants coming back negative.
EMS treated a firefighter for non-life threatening injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Newark Fire Department's Arson Squad.
