Officials announce the arrest of Luis Rodriguez-Cruz, 24, of Newark, who was wanted for questioning in connection with a 2-alarm fire that occurred Jan. 13th.
According to authorities, at approximately 10:10 a.m., some 60 Newark firefighters responded to 14 Garden Street for a report of a fire on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the 3-story, vacant commercial building.
Three firefighters were transported to University Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
The fire was put under control at 1:29 p.m.
Arson detectives developed sufficient evidence to identify Luis Rodriguez-Cruz as a suspect in this incident and arrested today without incident.
Police charged Rodriguez-Cruz with Arson, Unlicensed Entry of a Structure and Criminal Mischief.
In addition, police charged Rodriguez-Cruz is also with Burglary, Theft and Criminal Mischief in connection to a separate incident that also occurred on Jan.13th.
According to police, sometime before 11:30 a.m., officers responded to a Camp Street residence, near Mulberry Street, on a burglary call.
Upon arrival, officers learned that the apartment was broken into and cash and electronics were stolen.
Robbery detectives were subsequently identified Rodriguez-Cruz as a suspect in this incident.
