East Orange, Irvington Men Among Five Arrested During Newark Crime Reduction Sting; Weapon Recovered

Authorities announced the arrest of Rasul Brown, 23, Pete Johnson, 61, and a 15-year-old juvenile male, all of Newark, Antoine Hawkins, 28, of East Orange and Donell Craig, 34, of Irvington, as part of a crime reduction operation conducted Wednesday night.

In response to citizen complaints, recent incidents of violence, and intelligence gathered as part of ongoing investigations, police deployed members of the Criminal Intelligence and Precinct Narcotics Units to specific locations.

Police arrested Rasul Brown in the area of Fabyan Place, near Clinton Avenue, after detectives observed him with a loaded .40 caliber handgun.

Officials charged Brown with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Prohibited Weapon (large capacity magazine).

Police said they observed a narcotics transaction between Antoine Hawkins and Pete Johnson in the 900-block of Bergen Street where cops observed Hawkins in possession of 58 glassine envelopes of heroin and was subsequently charged with CDS Possession, Distribution of CDS and Distribution of CDS Within 1,000-ft. Of a School.

Police charged Johnson with CDS Possession after he was found in possession of two glassine envelopes of heroin.

Officers found the juvenile in possesion of eight decks of heroin, six vials of cocaine and one bag of marijuana police said.

Police arrested and charged him with three counts of CDS Possession and Distribution of CDS Within 1,000-ft. Of a School.

Also, officers apprehended Donell Craig, who was wanted on two outstanding warrants, in the area of 12th Avenue and South 7th Street.

As part of this operation, police recovered four handguns from a vacant apartment in the 300-block of South 9th Street. Specifically, two 9MM handguns and two .45 caliber handguns were recovered. One 9MM handgun had been reported stolen out of Virgini, aand one of the .45 caliber handguns was reported stolen out of Georgia.

At this location, officers said they ecovered 46 decks of heroin, 17 bags of marijuana, 43 bags of crack cocaine, and two large bags of raw cocaine.

Police further recovered numerous live .45 caliber rounds and various drug paraphernalia at another vacant apartment in the same block officials said.

These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
