A male suspect with a lengthy criminal history of drug arrests was apprehended last night by detectives from the Essex County Sheriff’s Bureau of Narcotics.
According to authorities, detectives were conducting plainclothes surveillance operations in Newark’s North Ward yesterday around 6:40 p.m., along Stone Street between 6th and Park avenues when they observed a double-parked 2014 Chevrolet Malibu obstructing the flow of traffic.
When our officers reportedly moved in to investigate, the driver, 32-year-old Angel Negron, attempted but failed to close a dashboard compartment hidden behind the vehicle’s radio,” Sheriff Armando Fontoura said.
After Negron was ordered out of the car, detectives spotted multiple clear plastic bags, containing 480 heroin-filled envelopes, stamped “Scooby Doo” in blue ink, and 38 grams of marijuana, in the hiding compartment.
Police placed Negron under arrest. During a pat-down search, Negron was found to be in possession of 20 grams of marijuana and $291 in drug sale proceeds.
The street value of the narcotics is estimated at $5,500.
Authorities charged Negron with two counts each of possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 1000 feet of the Benjamin Franklin School and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of a public housing complex. Also, Negron has also issued motor vehicle summonses for double parking, obstructing traffic and CDS in a motor vehicle.
A judge ordered Negron to be lodged at the county jail where he awaits a bail hearing on Monday’s charges.
