Firefighters were called to the scene to wash down blood that stained an Irvington Township street after police found a man dead overnight.
Police responded to the 1000 block of Grove - at Nye Avenue- before 3:30 a.m. to investigate reports of suspicious activities with an unconscious person in the area.
Upon officer's arrival, they found a severely injured, unconscious, and unresponsive man at that location.
Medics pronounced the unidentified male dead a short time later.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed the homicide investigation but they are awaiting the offcial cause of death from the State Regional Medical Examiner.
The identity of the victim has not been released and is pending notification of family members.
There were no arrests reported.
