Armed Carjacking Reported in Short Hills Community; Vehicle Recovered in Newark

Short Hills

A violent armed carjacking that occurred overnight in Short Hills is under investigation by police.

According to preliminary reports, police were called to a home in the 40's block of Addison Drive to investigate a report of an armed carjacking in progress that occurred just before 2 a.m.

Several Millburn police officers arrived at the scene and were told by a family returning from vacation that they were held at gunpoint outside their home by two black male suspects - who wore hoodies - that demanded them to hand over the keys to their vehicle and an undetermined amount of money according to reports.

According to police, one of the men held the 13-year-old daughter while the other pointed a gun at the father demanding he hand over a second set of keys. The suspects ultimately entered the victim's Range Rover and fled the scene toward the eastbound lanes of Route 24 towards Union.

The pair only made off with the first car after they reportedly had trouble starting the second.

Police pinged the vehicle to a neighborhood near Hawthorne Avenue in Newark's South Ward, where multiple police officers canvassed the area and found the Range Rover behind a partially vacant house in the single digit block of Patten Place.

According to reports, one person was detained at the scene, but there is no confirmation that the person police are holding is responsible for the armed carjacking.

There were no physical injuries immediately reported.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
