UPDATE: Driver of Car Flees The Scene After Fatally Striking 49-Year-Old Woman in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Newark Public Safety Anthony F. Ambrose have announced that authorities are investigating an incident in which a Newark woman was fatally injured when she was struck by a motor vehicle in Newark on Thursday evening.

According to authorities, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Newark police officers responded to the area of 16th Avenue and South 18th Street on a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

Arriving officers located the pedestrian, who was struck by a 2001 gray BMW authorities said.

The driver of the BMW fled the scene.

EMS rushed the severely injured pedestrian to University Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead a short time later authoritites said.

The victim has been identified as Ms. Wanda Dallas, 49, of Newark, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

This incident is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing, according to Fennelly.
