A Camden County Police officer was rushed to Cooper University Hospital where he remains in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries after a suspect allegedly fired upon, the officer at point blank range, causing his injury overnight.
According to preliminary reports, the incident happened around 10:15 p.m. near 9th and Chelton streets when the approached three men that he considered "suspicious" and began to investigate further.
Authorities said when the first year officer began to approach the male, one of them ran from the scene initiating a pursuit by the officer.
The officer managed to catch the suspect a short distance where he attempted to arrest the man before the suspect allegedly reached for the officer's gun initiating a fierce struggle for the weapon police said.
The suspect reportedly gained control of the officer's gun and fired one shot which struck the officer in the leg.
Responding officers were able to subdue the suspect then place him in custody.
The investigation remains under investigation.
