A 74-year-old woman attempting to cross a Somerset road remains in critical condition after she was struck by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon.
According to police, on October 31st at approximately 3:58 p.m. the Franklin Township Police Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a pedestrian struck on JFK Boulevard in the area of New Brunswick Road.
Upon arrival officers discovered a pedestrian lying in the roadway with serious injuries. Officers diverted traffic from the area and rendered aid to the pedestrian until EMS personnel arrived.
The initial investigation revealed that a 2012 Nissan Maxima operated by Nada Gilbert, 28, of Somerset was traveling eastbound on New Brunswick Road prior to the crash. As the Maxima made a left hand turn onto JFK Boulevard it struck Hendrika Houben, 74, of Somerset, as she was crossing the roadway in a marked crosswalk.
Houben was transported to a local area trauma center with a head injury and fractured leg. At the time of this release, she is listed in critical condition.
The factors that contributed to the crash are currently under investigation.
