There is an active investigation underway into a shooting that left one person dead and one other injured in Newark's South Ward overnight.
Reports of shots fired sent police and EMS to the 60's block of Vorhees Street at around 11:30 p.m. where units arrived at the scene to find two male victims suffering gunshot wounds according to authorities.
Both individuals were transported to University Hospital where authorities said one of the victims died a short time later while the other victim suffered non-life
threatening injuries.
Police officers canvassing the scene found multiple shell casings on Vorhees Street and other evidence.
The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
There were no arrests immediately reported.
**UPDATE 6:52 a.m.** The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has confirmed the homicide investigation.
