Officials from the Newark Fire Division's Arson Unit are investigating an incident where approximately 900 hundred gallons of fuel was improperly stored in a residential neighborhood yesterday.
According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, at approximately 10:33 p.m., Newark firefighters responded to the 300-block of South 19th Street on a call of a strong odor of gas emanating from two large plastic containers inside residential parking lot/driveway area.
Director Ambrose said firefighters observed approximately 550 gallons of gasoline stored in the two plastic containers, which were 15 to 20 feet from an occupied residence. Firefighters also observed a fuel spillage near the containers Director Ambrose said.
A black Chevy pick-up truck arrived on the scene and occupants of these vehicles attempted to remove the containers on behalf of their employer, reportedly a local business operator.
Police halted the removal and summonses were issued by the Newark Code Enforcement due to numerous violations.
Investigator also discovered a white van parked in front of the residence which also contains approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel. Police towed it after the fuel was removed for posing a safety hazard.
The Fire Division's Hazardous Materials Unit responded to scene to determine whether it was safe for residents living nearby.
The Department of Environmental Protection Emergency Response Team responded and transported the fuel from the van and plastic containers to their facility where it was stored safely.
Members of the Newark Police and the Fire Division’s Arson Unit, along with the City of Newark Code Enforcement personnel, are conducting an investigation for violation of state federal and local laws which may result in arrests and or summonses.
