Police in Newark are reporting the arrest of Mr. Albert D. Downey, 57, a Newark firefighter, for an aggravated assault against a police officer yesterday (Thursday).
Accoridng to authorities, at approximately 2 p.m., police officers located Downey, who was wanted for an outstanding warrant, in the West Ward.
Police said Mr. Downey attempted to walk away from the arresting officers before shoving one of the officers and wrestling with them.
There were no injuries reported.
Police took Mr. Downey into custody and charged him with Aggravated Assault Against a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest.
Police also charged Mr. Downey also with Contempt of Court on the outstanding warrant.
Director Ambrose suspended Mr. Downey today without pay.
These charges are merely accusations.
The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
