Annual Fibromyalgia Caterpillar 5K Run Comes to Newark

Newark

The Fibromyalgia Care Society of America (FCSA) launches the second annual caterpillar run taking place Saturday, June 3rd at 6 p.m.

In addition to moving to a new home at Branch Brook Park, the run will also take place at night, inviting runners and guests to use glow paint, flashing lights and other luminescent accouterments.

Over 60 runners have registered with registration remaining open until 9 pm on Friday, June 2nd.

Rock Race Timing has been contracted to be the official timekeeper of the run, which will count as a qualifying 5k race.

The event will also feature a Zumba Warm Up Session by Coley. The event is billed as a fun event for the entire family, not just the runner in the family.

“Unexplained and chronic pain, fatigue, cognitive impairment and a host of other words to describe our symptoms are most commonly associated with fibromyalgia” said Mildred Velez, FCSA’s Founder and Board President. “Fun is usually not award associated with this condition. Our hope with this event is to raise much needed awareness while also having fun so we can make people less scared of it and also so that we can reach a broader audience.”

The Caterpillar Run is taking place in conjunction with the end of May which is National Fibromyalgia Awareness Month serving to unite communities from across the country throughout the month of May to help bring attention to this condition.

One of the greatest challenges of this syndrome is the lack of awareness and support services available for the sufferer and their family. The FCSA is seeking to change that by introducing a multidisciplinary Center of Excellence Program.

The FCSA Fibromyalgia Center of Excellence will be dedicated entirely to helping those affected by fibromyalgia.
