Police Charge Woman with Operating Illegal Liquor Establishment in Newark's Ironbound Section

Authorities in Newark are reporting the arrest of **Claudia DaSilva, 53, of Newark** for operating an illegal liquor establishment on Friday, May 12.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, in response to complaints by concerned citizens, detectives of the Newark Police Division’s Special Enforcement Bureau responded to an address in the 100 block of Rome Street to investigate.

Director Ambrose said investigators observed five illegal gambling machines, 20.5 cases of assorted beers and 24 assorted bottles of alcoholic beverages.

Police also confiscated $358.75 in proceeds from the establishment Director Ambrose said.

Officers arrested DaSilva and charged her with Maintaining an Illegal Alcohol Establishment, Unlawful Possession of Alcohol, and Possession of a Gambling Device.

These charges lodged against Ms. DaSilva are merely accusations.

Ms. DaSilva is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
