Newark Emergency Responders rescued 29 people yesterday due to the heavy rain and flooding that affected city streets.
According to officials, The Newark Fire Department's water rescue teams along with members of the Office of Emergency Management were activated to assist individuals trapped in their vehicles during the storm.
Firefighters used the Zodiac rescue craft and OEM used the amphibious track vehicle as part of the operation officials said in a statement.
The East Ward was largely affected by flooding with people stranded in submerged vehicles where emergency crews also performed search efforts due to several vehicles that were abandoned.
**Emergency management officials are charting the rescue operations for the day in this way:**
• At Avenue I and Backus Street, NFD rescued 2 men and a woman from three different vehicles.
• On Raymond Boulevard and Doremus Avenue, 4 men and 2 women were rescued from three vehicles.
• Magazine and Paris street is where 4 men were rescued from one vehicle.
• Six men and 2 women were rescued from the 300-block of Wilson Avenue from five vehicles.
• A woman and child in the 300-block of Wilson Avenue were rescued from the woman’s workplace.
• Two women, a man and an infant were rescued from three vehicles at Roanoke and Foundry streets, near Avenue P.
• Two men were rescued from one vehicle at Avenue P near Roanoke.
There were no serious injuries reported.
