The Essex County Prosecutor's Office have confirmed that police involved shooting that occurred in Newark's West Ward has resulted in a fatality.
According to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau is investigating a police involved shooting that occurred Tuesday evening fatally wounding a man.
Authorities said the incident took place at approximately 9:15 p.m. in the area of South Orange Avenue and South 17th Street.
The Prosecutor's Office said circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, but according to preliminary reports released by the Newark Police Department, detectives from the Department’s Major Crimes Division, patrolling in the area of South Orange Avenue for shootings and robberies approached a suspected vehicle.
According to Newark Police, as officers approached, they observed one of the occupants armed with a gun prompting a detective to fire his weapon, striking the armed suspect after which police recovered the suspect’s weapon. EMS transported the man to University Hospital where he died a short time later.
Authorities said this is an active and ongoing investigation to be conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Attorney General guidelines require all County Prosecutor’s Offices to respond to incidents whenever a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon.
