A 33-year-old Atlantic County woman was taken into custody Monday after admitting to police that she abandoned her 13-month-old son at the library.
According to library officials, the woman entered the Clifton Memorial Library on Piaget Avenue at noon and asked a volunteer to watch her child for a moment. However, the volunteer became concerned when the mother did not immediately return.
Clifton police officers were dispatched and after a search of the surrounding area, police located the woman on Day Street.
The woman ultimately admitted she left the child behind at the library.
The woman attempted to prearrange a turnover of custody to a Division of Child Protection and Permanency case worker but grew impatient while waiting for a response.
Police charged the unidentified woman with endangering the welfare of a child and child abandonment.
