Police in Newark are reporting the arrest of Mr. Al A. Cowart, 36, of Newark, for possession of a handgun last night (Friday).
According to Newark Police, at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers observed a Chevrolet Camaro driving erratically and speeding at South 12th Street and South Orange Avenue.
Officers attempted to make a motor vehicle stop, but the driver ignored the officers’ commands to pull over and continued driving across the curb and onto the sidewalk, stopping at the intersection of South 11th Street and 12th Avenue police said.
When officers approached the vehicle, they observed a handgun on the passenger seat of the vehicle.
Police immediately arrested the driver, Al A. Cowart, and recovered a weapon from the vehicle police said.
Police charged Cowart with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapon Possession, Resisting Arrest and Eluding.
Offciers issued Cowart a motor vehicle summonses for various traffic violations.
These charges against Mr. Cowart are merely accusations.
He is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
