UPDATE: Paterson Police Fatally Shoots Armed Man

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes announces the activation of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office Shooting Response Team for a police- involved shooting that occurred in the City of Paterson on April 14, 2017. This incident resulted in one fatality.

According to a press release, The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office Shooting Response Team has been activated for a police-involved shooting that occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m., on Friday, April 14, 2017, in the area of Fulton Place and East 16th Street in Paterson.

Police were dispatched to a residence in that location; upon arrival, they encountered a male party allegedly armed with a handgun.

During the encounter, an on-duty Paterson Police Officer discharged his service weapon multiple times.

The civilian male party was transported to a local area hospital for treatment of injuries. He passed away at the hospital.

Next-of-kin has been notified. A post- mortem examination has been conducted by the Regional Medical Examiner in Newark.

A handgun was recovered on scene. No other civilian or police injuries were reported.

The investigation in this matter remains ongoing. At this time, further information will not be released so as not to jeopardize the safety of persons involved or to jeopardize the investigation in progress.
