UPDATE: Authorities Identify Man Shot Dead by Newark Police

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the person fatally shot during an encounter with Newark Police Officers yesterday is identified as Kenneth Francis, 37, of Newark.

Authorities said Francis was pronounced dead at 6:04 p.m.

The incident is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau.

Two Newark Police officers discharged their weapons during an incident in the 900 block of Hunterdon Street.

There were no police officers shot authorities said.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Attorney General guidelines require all County Prosecutor’s Office to respond to incidents whenever a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon.
